During the Civil War in the United States it was North (Union) against the South (Confederacy). The border between North and South was Missouri, which tried to remain neutral. Kentucky and Tennessee were on the North side. Most of the fighting was in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

West Virginia and Nevada became states during the Civil War. Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861, after the secession began, but before the war started on April 12, 1861.

Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, California, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and West Virginia (broke away from Virginia in 1863), Oregon and Nevada remained in the Union.
