From 1957 to 1959 US Soldiers (US Army) operated as US Military advisors under MAAGV (US Military Assistance Advisory Group Vietnam). In 1962 MACV (US Military Assistance Command Vietnam) was created; MACV existed until the end of the war.

"GI" was a term in use long before the Vietnam War. "Joe" is another common one. And, going back further, you find nicknames relating to specific time periods, such as "blue bellies" (Civil War, Indian Wars), "Yankee" or "Billy Yank" (Civil War), "Doughboy" (First World War), "Dogface" (Second World War, Korean War), and there's certain to be other, lesser-known ones.
