And, going back further, you find nicknames relating to specific time periods, such as "blue bellies" (Civil War, Indian Wars), "Yankee" or "Billy Yank" (Civil War), "Doughboy" (First World War), "Dogface" (Second World War, Korean War), and there's certain to be other, lesser-known ones.
