The Nazi Germans used "self flying bombs" known as V2 rockets. There were two types actually. The second type they developed could fly into London and it was so quiet you could not tell where and when the rocket would land. These bombs were the precursors to the missiles we have now.

There were also the bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) on the Royal Army Air Force locations, the seaports and cities.

The main big bombs were called the V.1 and the V.2 -the doodlebugs- these were bombs with engines and when the petrol ran out, they would fall on britain.
