Maine would enter the union as a free state and then Missouri would enter the union as a slave state. It banned slavery north of the 36 degree 30' line. It was written by Henry Clay and the current president John Adams opposed it because he felt that the U.S. Constitution didn't give Congress the power to pass it.but i just realised this answer waz very bogus and almost killed myself trying 2 fix it :P

Missouri's application for statehood raised the question of slavery in Missouri and in the rest of the territory west of the Mississippi which had been added to the Union through the Louisiana Purchase. After a ferocious debate, the Missouri Compromise was adopted in 1820: Missouri was admitted as a slave state, balanced by Maine's admission as a free state, and slavery was excluded from the Louisiana Territory north of the latitude line 36°30' and permitted south of it.

All Missouri Territory north of the parallel 36°30' north excluded slavery with the exception of the portion that was the proposed state of Missouri. It also allowed the Arkansas Territory to have slavery. It allowed for the the admission of Maine into the Union as a free state.

The terms were simple, and they kept the peace for thirty years.

The territory of Missouri would be allowed to join the USA as a slave-state, on condition that there would be no further slave-states North of the parallel that marked Missouri's Southern border.

Only the admission of California in 1850 made this Compromise unworkable. If California had been admitted as two states, North and South California, the war could have been averted.
