The significance of the Berlin Airlift was that it showed the Soviet Union that the western Allies would not abandon the citizens of West Berlin and were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to maintain their independence. With the Berlin Blockade in place, the Soviets had expected the Western allies to abandon the city but underestimated the Britain and America's determination to supply their troops and the civilian population of Berlin.

After the airlift began the Soviets claimed it would never work and the subsequent success of the Airlift was a great humiliation for them.

The USSR blocked all supplies going into Berlin (they controlled East Germany where Berlin was). They claimed the road going into it from West Germany was "closed for repairs". Basically, C-47 cargo planes were used to airlift supplies into the allied controlled parts of Berlin.

Who was the mayor of west Berlin during the Berlin airlift?

I have solved this by process of elimination- My guess- Herr Theodor Heuss. It is hard to pronounce ( YHooisse!) but yanks got it to sound like Hughes. He was the namesake of a famous German Coast Guard vessel modeled by Graupner. Oh well we have ferryboats named in honor of politicians.

Reason us policymakers viewed USSR a threat?

At the end of World War II, American leaders saw the power and ambitions of the Soviet Union as a threat to our national security. The Cold War was a war of words and ideologies rather than a shooting war, although at times the Cold War turned “hot” as in Korea and Vietnam. Basically, the Cold War was a rivalry between the United States as leader of the western democracies, and the Soviet Union and the nations that were controlled by the communists. Some causes of the Cold War included: Attempts by the Soviets and Chinese Communists to influence and take over areas in Asia and Europe. The division of Germany after the war---The Soviets blockaded West Berlin, which was deep within Communist East Germany. The Soviets thought the blockade would allow them to take over all of Berlin. The US replied with the Berlin Airlift, to supply West Berlin. September, 1949, the Soviet Union tested its first Atomic Bomb.
