I would not say it was a struggle. To win his senate seat, his minions had to smear his rival with sexual misconduct allegations to get him elected. A charismatic speaker, he was able to convince many people he was right for the job, and the liberal leaning media was extremely kind to him. He has been, as president, a dismal failure under any way you want to look at it.
Obviously it was easier for him than for all the people who have tried to be elected and failed or did not even try because they knew election was impossible for them.
Among those few that were elected, Obama had a relatively easy time because
Some of the obstacles facing Barack Obama were these: He was a biracial child at a time when interracial marriage was still not common (his father was black, his mother was white); his biological father left when young Barack was about two, and had little if any contact with the boy after that. When Barack was five, his mom re-married and the family moved to Indonesia, which meant that for four years, he had to learn a new language and a new culture. He ultimately moved back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents and finish school, but he did not really know what he wanted to do with his life and began hanging out with a high school group of friends who used marijuana. Eventually, he got away from drugs and focused on his studies, but he did not come from a wealthy family, so he had to work, get scholarships, and take out loans to finish his education. And when he wanted to run for political office, he had never been in politics before so he had to overcome the prejudices of people who thought he had a strange name; later, he also had to overcome the myths and false statements spread by people who did not think he was American. Mr. Obama's rise to the presidency thus included overcoming obstacles of being biracial; being raised in a lower-middle class home by a single mom; having almost no contact with his biological father; having a foreign-sounding name; being a political unknown when he first started in politics; and not coming from a wealthy background.
