It depends entirely what you mean? 'Popular' in terms of income or 'popular' in terms of choices available. Again this depends on which socio-economic group you look at. If I assume you mean 'popular' in terms of numbers then the 1950's saw a huge shift in male jobs-remember the US was switching from a war economy where millions of men were demobilized and the military remained a prominent institution throughout the 1950's. Certainly serving the military and supporting the industrialized military economy saw more men in the service or servicing the military. The boom industries were cars, planes, ships whilst the air-conditioning, appliance industies also boomed leading to increased population in places like Arizona and California. The 1950's were the making of the middle-classes in the US so consumer goods became more prominent. Agriculture continued its decline in numbers, the growth of the secondary and service industry was another boom. Regular full-time employment became the norm for most men, against the seasonal, fluctuating employment of the 20's and 30's. The most desired jobs were still the medical doctor, the lawyer, the teacher for those who could get to college, if not then you would be looking at the growth cities-the car plants, white and brown goods, construction. The biggest single employer was government.
In the 1940's, women became increasingly involved in the military and in jobs previously male dominated as a result of World War II. Jobs in the military included service in the Army and Navy Nurse Corps, and various auxiliary army and navy units that were not engaged in combat. Non-military jobs included work in the Women Airforce Service Pilots, Office of Strategic Services, American Red Cross, Cadet Nurse Corps, the United Service Organizations, the federal government, war factories, transportation, agriculture, and office work.
