∙ 14y agoAccording to Mark's Gospel Jesus said, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me," just before he died. This is also followed by Matthew's Gospel.
According to Luke's Gospel Jesus said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" and then he died.
According to John's Gospel, Jesus simply said, "It is finished." and then he died.

∙ 14y agoUnlike the later gospels, Mark's Gospel portrayed Jesus as human, although he had extraordinary powers that he used in the service of God. The last words attributed ot Jesus in this Gospel were: Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

In the book of Mark it says the same. Mark 15:34.
In the Book of Luke it says, Father in to thy hands I commend my spirit. Luke 23:46
In the Book of John it says, It is finished John 19:30

∙ 8y agoThis differs from gospel to gospel. Beginning with the original account, in Mark:
- In Mark's Gospel (15:34) Jesus' last words on the cross were (KJV), "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" He had prayed to God at the Garden of Gethsemene (Mark 14:35: "And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.") and now realised that God was not answering his prayer to be saved from crucifixion.
- This is also followed in Matthew's Gospel, perhaps because its author recognised the words as being from a Psalm.
- For the author of Luke's Gospel, Mark's account was not suitable for the Son of God, so changing Jesus' last words before he gave up the ghost: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit."
- In keeping with John's portrayal of Jesus as divine and pre-existing (and therefore with foreknowledge of his fate), Jesus' last words were very different: "It is finished."

Did Jesus really speak all the words the Gospels say He said?

The original known accounts of Jesus' mission are Mark's Gospel and the hypothetical 'Q' document so any words, attributed to Jesus but not in these two books, are unlikely to have been spoken by Jesus.Even Mark's author used poetic licence in attributing words to Jesus.
