Ancient Greek culture and civilization arguably has had more influence on modern "Western" thought and identity than any other. Greek contributions, innovations, and indeed foundations in the fields of science, philosophy, art, and politics (namely democracy) are seen as the foundations on which modern western-European culture and the modern, humanist, democratic state are based. Historically speaking, Greece had little contact with what we now consider Europe except through trade and colonisation in and around the Mediterannean. Only with the growth of the Roman Empire did their cultural, aesthetic and religious traits and ideals come to be widespread and (somewhat superficially) cemented, so to speak, in the form of the hybrid Graeco-Roman culture. With the collapse of Rome and the onset of the European dark ages, however, all traces of Greek heritage and legacy were again lost to Europe, only having been preserved in what remained of Byzantium and the new, flourishing Islamic cultures in Spain, North Africa and the Near East. The spread of Christianity, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment forged the modern concept of the "European" identity, and the contributions of Greek civilization, to the exclusion of all others, were seen as its progenitor. Thus, it may be fair to say, the most significant legacy of Greece is the appropriation of its culture, history and contributions by dominant, modern western-European societies in the creation of this new artificial composite identity which they, upon the age of colonialism, would hold to be the height of human achievement, thus furthermore providing the basis on which notions of (particularly northern Germanic) European racial superiority would fester and rot in decrepit minds of the upper classes and establishment, play on the decadence and vanity of the bourgeoisie, and instilled in the vacant minds of illiterate peasants and labourers.

1. Our alphabet evolved from the Greek alphabet.

2. Greek philosophers and thinkers like Aristotle and Archimedes were the first people we know of in Europe to wonder how nature works and to try to figure it out. Archimedes even invented the screw, and figured out how buoyancy works.

3. Greek plays were the first recorded stage performances. Even today, one of the major symbols of actors are the Greek tragic and comic masks.

4. Greek sculpture still inspires and sets a foundation for modern sculptors. Modern columns are often modeled after the Greek column styles.
