William and Richard were his legitimate sons. Both pre-deceased him. He had two legitimate daughters, Euphemia and Matilda. He also had two illigitimate sons, Robert and Reginald. Actually, Henry I is know to have had at least twenty illigitimate children, in addition to his two legitimate children. So, while he had one legitimate son, William the Athling, who drowned on the White Ship in 1120, he had; Robert, Earl of Gloucester. Rainald, Earl of Cornwall. Gilbert. William de Tracy. William. Eustace. Henry fitz Henry. Richard of Lincoln. Fulk of Abingdon. Robert fitz Edith, Baron of Okenhampton. There well may have being others.

Henry VIII had two sons that survived infancy, one was illegitimate and the other was legitimate and later succeeded him as king. Henry's illegitimate son by Elizabeth (Bessie) Blout was born in 1519 and named Henry Fitzroy, Fitzroy meaning 'king's son'. Many titles were later bestowed on the boy including the title Duke of Richmond and Henry briefly considered making Fitzroy his heir.

Henry VIII's other son was born on the 12th October 1537 at Hampton Court Palace. He was legitimate as his mother was Jane Seymour, Henry's third wife, and he was named Edward. He became king aged 9 and was Edward VI.
