The revolt began in Essex when locals in Brentwood reacted to an over-zealous poll-tax collector. From Brentwood, resistance to tax collectors spread to neighbouring villages, while across counties such as Kent, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Norfolk, armed bands of villagers and townsmen also rose up and attacked manors and religious houses.

no offence 2 the person who wrote the above but that's what happended not the reasons

the reasons were: Taxes, England had been at war with France for almost 50 yrs! it cost alot and taxes were raised and a new one created, the poll tax most hated by peasants because of how unfair it was(they had to pay the same as the rich lordds), John Ball and other priests spread the idea peasants were just as good as the lords, the black death (many peasants died and they became more valuble they bagan to ask for more money/land in return for work and then they passed a new law to say peasants could not be payed more than before the black death), the king was only 14 and his advisors were useless.

Different people say the demands were diferent things, also the demands kept changing and were mostly unrealistic and imposible for the nobles to agree to, these are the ones i found anyway:

1)end to serfdom (not agreed to as alredy on the decline from the black death)

2)free trade ( not agreed to due to less demand of the nobles produce due to less people needing it (decline in popluation from black death)and having to pay peasants to work on the land whereas before they were forced to work for free, nobles were losing money. The nobles and therefore the king was not likely to agree to the demand as they gained back some of this money they were losing and making a profit from them)

3)fixed price on land at fourpence per acre (not agreed to again as nobles loose money)

4)end to all titles apart from the knig who would still be knig (not agreed to as it was a big impossibility for the nobility as it would mean giving up their land, money and anything else that set them apart from and meant that they were better than the peasants.)

5)confiscation of church lands for it to be distributed among poor (not agreed to as king is chsen by god and therefore the unpining of teh church would weaken the king and the peoples beleif in him)

6) judicial system changed (not agreed to as would mean nobles not in charge anymore)

7) end to poll tax ( agreed to as had such negative impact on population whenever introduced- not reeinstated untill 1990 with thacher and look at the impact it had then)

8) wanted the kings advisors to be handed over so they could "deal with them" (partialy agreed to as they were let into the tower of london where sudbury and hales were hiding - they were beheaded and put on spikes- like tratiors and treaasonists)

9)pardons for everyone (given but not upeld as king used these to find those involved in revolt and kill them- some argue they were not deserved as teh peasants were violent)

hope this helps ^.^

The main call of the peasant rebellion was that they wanted to see the end of Serfdom.
