For the Russians their battlefleets had to travel 18,000 miles one way just to get there. Their armies had to march or railroad a long distance to get to the front. Transportation was the problem.
For Japan, they were running out of money and men. Resources were the problems.
Imperial Japan had no problems. It's sneak attack on Russia was designed to prevent the building of an empire in East Asia. Japan wanted to make sure there was no interference in that from Russia. The two totalitarian regimes fought over spheres of influence and real territory in China and Korea. The war was over quickly as Russia was unable to respond in time.
