The Irish rulers were known as kings until well after the Norman invasion. After this, they were called chieftains, and existed as such until Ireland came firmly under British rule for the first time in the seventeenth century. there still are chieftans (or at least those who claim titles) but no one cares. Theres two funny books Mccarthys bar and the road to mccarthy. They are travelogues by the late Peter McCarthy who in the second one tracks the Mac Cárthaigh Mór (MacCarthy More) to Moroco of all places.
