Christianity is a complete system of theology, philosophy and morals with many cultural and local manifestations around the world, all connected, however, by one institution, the Church. Rome is a merely a city in which Christianity is manifest. Rome is notable, however, for being the city of the pope, who is the leader of the universal Church, although some offshoots of Christianity dispute this.

The religion of the Byzantine Empire remained the same as the religion of the eastern part of the Roman Empire prior to the fall of the western part (see below). It was originally called the Eastern or Greek Church. Later it came to be called Orthodox Church. The religion of the western part of the Roman empire was originally called western, or Latin. Later it came tho be called Catholic Church.

Byzantine Empire is a term coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire in 476. The Romans did not use this term. They just had the term Roman Empire. The eastern part of the Roman Empire continued to exist for another 1,000 years after the fall of the western part.

The term Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the name of the Greek city which was redeveloped, turned into the capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and renamed Constantinople by Constantine the Great in 330. It is used to indicate the fact that not long after the fall of the west, this empire became centred on Greece and Greek in character after it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620, some 150 years after the fall of the west.

There was no one religion in Rome two thousand years ago. Rome was a country and city that had people from all around the world so there were many religions practiced by the population. The Roman authorities were pretty progressive and would allow the population to do what they wanted as long as they didn't break the laws. The main problem with Christianity was that they perceived it as a rebellious movement breaking Roman laws.
