They were horrible; people hated being there! Diseases were rife, there was trench foot, the smell was terrible, and the soldiers were constantly cold, wet and dirty. Dead bodies lined the floors, which were covered with effluent. The trenches flooded frequently, and chlorine gas settled in them easily. Rats and lice passed around with ease.

Trench warfare was horrible and scary due to the fact that every minute bombs were dropping down into them. Also a disease called trench foot affected soldiers feet and caused them to go moldy the other thing was that when the soldiers went over the top there were ladders that the soldiers had to climb in order to get over which meant that the soldiers were an easy target as they were going over the top, when the soldiers went through no mans land because the enemy had MG's it made it easier for the enemy to kill lots of soldiers. There would also dead bodies inside the trenches so it would bring morale down and fear up.

It was horrible, the trenches were muddy, full of dead bodies, and of streams of water. Lice, trench-foot (as well as other deseases were spred). The men had little, or no privacy, and faced danger 24/7. The enemies fired non-stop, shells were blasting all over the place.. over all it wasnt a nice place to be in.

Trench warfare during World War I was miserable. Even people who were not wounded by falling shells suffered from infections and psychological trauma.

Some historians cite the trench warfare of the US Civil War as a comparison to the trenches in WW 1.
