A forum was a marketplace. Most specialized in certain goods or services. You could loosely equate them with modern shopping malls. However the main forum , the Forum Romanum was mainly a civic center. The treasury, temples, government offices, the rostra and public announcements were all to be found there. At times of special celebrations, public dinners were given there.

∙ 9y agoThe fora were marketplaces. Basically, buying and selling were the daily activities carried out in a forum. However, in the city of Rome itself there were numerous fora with some being general merchandise places and others being specialty marketing centers such as vegetables, meat, etc. Meeting halls or basilicas were many times attached to the larger fora. The main forum in Rome, what we call the Forum Romanum, morphed from a market place to a civic center with temples, the senate house, the rostra, in addition to high priced shops. It was also the center of the empire and all distances were measured from there. In the outlying towns the main forum was also used for trials in addition to commerce and other civic duties.
