In 1914 World War One was fought after the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. Hate instantly sprung between the countrys and Austria wanted to invade Serbia. Austria didn't want to look liek that bad guy though so they gave Serbia an ultimatium I believe it's called. It gave them 5 conditions they had to meet or they would invade. Serbia met 4 of the 5 but that wasn't enough and Austria invaded. While invading though, Germany (who was on Austria's side) marched through Belgium who had declared nutrality, which means they wanted nothing to do with the fight. Because they went through Belgium Great Britain was mad they didn't respect their nutrality so they joined Serbia. and so on...

World War 2 was about groups of people, the Nazis, who were persecuting (killing) Jewish people. The Nazis were mostly Germans, with the aid of Japan. Many European countries formed alliances to stop the Germans. Then Japan made a huge mistake. They decided to attack the United States, the most powerful country in terms of the navy. The United States survived the attack, but it caused them to join the side of the Europeans set on destroying the evil Nazis. The Nazis and Japanese were defeated, eventually, after many long hard years of battle.

Nothing. Wars are useless since they are never the answer to any political problem: European powers were being @ssholes to each other thanks to the nationalistic feelings, and all just because Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austria-Hungary throne) was shot in Sarajevo, Bosnia- what could have been a mere local tragedy.

Sorry, cant give you any quotes, none come to mind because perhaps there really weren't any?

Not sure they even knew what they were fighting for, other than being patriotic to their countries. It wasn't land or territory, nor was it to liberate something which had been oppressed, or to right some wrong that had been committed.

The war started because of the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, of Austria. Once war was declared by one country on another, Another Country would declare war on them, to help their allies, and so on and so on.

The only quote I can think of are the lyrics to the US song "Over There",

but that wouldn't have been until 1917 (when the US entered the war), not 1914.

"The Yanks are coming,

Yes the Yanks are coming,

and it wont be over till its over,

over there"

For your project I would just suggest you say something like "defend your country, your family, from the attacks of the enemy." Because in actuality, that's about all they really knew.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful

It was a combination of nationalism, Imperialism, militarism and alliance systems.

Nationalism: Everyone was a patriot. They loved their country, and if their country thought war was glorious then they did too. They would do anything to protect their homeland.

Imperialism: Many nations wanted to extend and gain more colonies. The British Empire covered alot of the world back then, and other nations were jealous of that.

Militarism: Countries were quickly developing larger navies and armies, competing to see who could build the best ship or the best gun.

Alliance systems: Many countries had secret alliances to protect/help one another in the event of a war.

All of this served to ignite the "powder keg" (so to speak) that Europe was when a Serb assassinated the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria declared war on Serbia. Germany decided to help Austria, Russia took the side of Serbia. France took Russia's side and Britain, bound by treaty to protect France, joined the war with the Allies.

Hey presto, war.
