The European nation Poland is an old nation that has managed to keep the same name since it's founding in the early 900's. It was known as the Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the late Renaissance and through the 16th-18th centuries until it was divided up and conquered by Austria, Russia, and Prussia in the Napoleonic Wars and re-founded later on.

You need to bear in mind that the current official name for Poland is:

Rzeczpospolita Polska - Republic of Poland. This name has been given to Poland couple of times and to distinguish among them, they have respective numbers.

I - Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów (see below)

II - in period between the World Wars

III - 1989 till now

IV - 2006-2008 ... and now we are back to III

The name didn't really change that much throughout the history:

- Księstwo Polskie

- Królestwo Polskie

- Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów (Republic of Both Nations - made of two parts: Poland (aka Korona) and Lithuania)

- Polska Republika Ludowa - Polish Peoples' Republic

The country is also known in some cultures (mainly Eastern ones - Turkey, for instance) as Lechistan.
