What would cause a 1988 Honda Prelude to shut off intermittently and then be turned on again after a few momments yet the power seems like it is cutting out?

It could be that your fuel filter needs to be replaced. Your fuel pump will build up pressure when the car is not running and will charge the line enough to allow the car to run for a while but the filter reduces the amount of fuel flow and starves the engine of fuel. I had this problem and one of my computer wire conecters had become slitly dislodged. This took me forever to find, but when I did just one little push on the harness and every thing worked like new again. The computer is behind the drivers door under the back seat side panel.

It is decently possible that it is an electrical short making it register the mist setting instead. A test of this would be to turn it to the mist setting to see if it turns off, as shorts can cause triggers to switch.
