A speed bar is the portion of a professional bar devoted entirely to the most frequently used spirits and liqueurs. It's also usually composed of well spirits, meaning brands …that may not be considered top-shelf or premium, though this is not always the case at finer bars and dining establishments. The speed bar helps to keep a bartender in one spot and not having to move in several different directions every time he or she has to make a drink. The order of the spirits is up to the bartender's taste, but the selection usually remains the same. Speed bars also come in handy when you're setting up a home bar, helping a friend prepare for a party, or purchasing spirits for a wedding. To fill you speed bar, you'll need one of each of the following spirits: vodka, gin, white rum, silver tequila, scotch, bourbon, triple sec, and sweet and sour. The price point and particular brand is entirely up to your budget and personal taste. Professional bars also usually choose sweet and sours that don't need to be refrigerated; however, these mixers include preservatives and sometimes, artificial flavors. If possible, choose a sweet and sour with natural ingredients that requires refrigeration.Once you have all the ingredients, you will need a small collection of equipment to make your cocktails. Purchase a martini shaker, pint glass for mixing, bar spoon, jigger, strainer, and pour spout for each bottle. Bar towels, zesters, and a cutting board and knife are also great additional pieces to have on hand.If you have the space in your speed bar, you might also consider purchasing a bottle of dark rum, agave tequila, grenadine, and bitters. Rose's lime juice is a common addition to the speed bar, though the difference in taste between artificial lime juice and natural lime juice is considerable. If your budget is limited, build your speed bar around one of two of your favorite cocktails, and add on with time.Setting up a speed bar is a great way to start building your home bar. Start with these basics and as your drink repertoire expands, so will your bar. (MORE)

Since 1968 the Original Mother's has been helping Chicagoans and tourists party with live music, pool, and karaoke. It's a favorite with visiting and local celebrities and kee…ps the party going until 4 a.m. every day, and until 5 a.m. on Saturday.Like its neighbors The Lodge, Butch McGuire's, and She-nannigan's, Mother's opened decades ago. These bars have now become institutions that have made the Rush and Division corridor the famous nightlife destination it is today. In its early years Mother's saw such incredible acts as including Lou Reed with the Velvet Underground, Chicago, Chaka Khan, and Eric Clapton with Cream. Many people recognize The Original Mother's from the 1986 classic movie "About Last Night" with Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. Once you're at the bar you might see someone that you recognize. Mother's is a favorite spot for celebrities to visit, and a short list of past visitors includes Chris Farley, John Belushi, Jim Belushi, REO Speed Wagon, Evel Knievel, Mohamad Ali, Hugh Heffner, Leroy Neman, Rod Stewart, Leon Spinx, Mickey Mantle, Steve Dahl, Dick Biondi, Ko Ko Taylor, Mila Kunis, George Lopez, and Kelly Clarkson. Stop into Mother's and who knows who you'll see.The Original Mother's is located a floor down from Division Street, and it is massive. There are pool tables and beer pong, high tops and plush couches, a gigantic dance floor. There's also the stage and multiple bars. With so much room Mother's is able to host several events. In addition to space for private parties, they also host several public parties throughout the year. Their New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day, and Halloween parties are always packed. They also celebrate Mardi Gras and host an Elvis Fest. Wednesday is Sumo Smackdown, when you can put on a sumo suit and get in the ring. Thursdays are for karaoke, and Fridays are LIT, a party that's filled with glow sticks. The Original Mother's is on the corner of Divison and Dearborn at 26 West Division Street. The Red Line has a station a block west and several bus lines stop near the bar. There are also lots of taxis in the area. Driving is not recommended and parking is very hard to find. The reason the bar is called The Original Mother's is because there's a bar called Mother's, Too, down the street. This isn't an attempt to infringe on the original; it's owned by the same company and has more of feel of a saloon. If you're looking for a place to party, dance, and drink, The Original Mother's will fit your bill. The clientele, like most of the bars in the Rush & Division party scene, skews towards the younger side, but you'll find people of all ages. (MORE)

Klondike is a region of the Yukon Territory in Northwest Canada, just east of the Alaskan border. On 16 August 1896, rich gold deposits were found in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek, a… tributary of the Klondike River. This sparked the Klondike goldrush of 1897-98. News of the discovery reached the United States in July, 1897, and within a month thousands of people were leaving their homes and jobs and pouring into the north. Over the next six months, approximately 100,000 gold-seekers set off for the Yukon: only 30,000 completed the trip. (MORE)
