The story of Robin Hood first shows up as an oral poem around the year 1225 and this is told from person to person. It was in poetry form so people could remember it. As the story grows and evolves new characters are added and the storyline changes with the times. The modern retelling of the story has added events, people, and times to the tale, so to a great deal of extent he has never died. A fictional character that always evolves.
Whether Robin Hood was based on a real person, or people, or was entirely fictional, is unknown at present, and so a straightforward answer to the question in difficult.
Tradition has it that Robin died sometime in 1247, though there is no way to verify this, and some evidence would indicate that Robin had not even been born by this date (an early Ballad, A Lytell Geste of Robyn Hode, refers to "Edward, our comely Kyng", whose deeds therein described only tally with Edward II, who reigned 1307-1327). Professor Holt, in his excellent book Robin Hood (2nd Ed., 1989) argues convincingly for an earlier date, and does entertain the possibility that there is some truth to the 1247 date of his demise.
An early history (Gale, C17) records the following epitaph, which is also to be found on a graveslab at Kirklees Abbey:
Hear undernead dis laitl stean Lais Robert Earl of Huntingun Near arcir der as hie sa geud An pipl kauld im Robin Heud Sic utlaws as hi an is men Vil England nivr si agen. Obiit 24 Kal Dekembris 1247However, the date (24 Calends December) is fictional (there is no such date), the language unconvincingly archaic, and the graveslab probably too recent to be his.
Little is known even of the circumstances of his death, though one early version is to be found in the work Robin Hood's Death, which may bave been composed by 1440, and can be read here: http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/child/ch120.htm
It is unlikely that Robin Hood ever existed; however, tradition generally places him about the time of the King John of England. About 1100 through 1200. More or less about the end of the Early Middle Ages, and in the middle of the High Middle Ages.
Sherwood Forest, among his friends
According to the early ballad "The Death of Robin Hood," which I follow in my novel The Robin Hood Chronicles, Robin Hood died at the priory at Kirklees, where his cousin was the prioress.
Robin Hood is a fictional character that first appears in 1225 as an oral poem that is passed from person to person. As the story evolves and changes characters are added and events are added to the tale. This is still going on today with the modern retelling in movies. So, he never dies, but changes with the times.
Some question whether Robin Hood ever lived. But it is said he died in the 12th century. He was wounded, and the nun who was tending him, murdered Robin in revenge for Robin's opposition to the corruption in the Catholic Church.
