Officially it began in 1848, but most people arrived (by most we mean nearly 95%) in and around 1849, hence the name 49'ers for the San Francisco Football team, most people by boat landed in San Francisco and took a carriage or wagon to Sacramento then to the mining towns on the mountains in the Sierra Mountain Range...it lasted until about 1853, then a trickle continued until about 1875 when another small mine was found and a minor rush began again. California became a state in 1850.
