I inherited the same gun. My father bought his new. It has the retractable sling in the stock. I have never seen another rifle with this. My dad told me when he was living that the 583.75 stamped in the stock was the price of the gun new. If this is true, this is the only rifle I have ever seen that had the price stamped into the barrel when it was produced. I believe mine holds 18 bullets. I have seen posts of people asking about these older 22 calibers jamming, and how to correct it. If the gun is kept clean and oiled properly, you won't have that problem. The butt plate on mine got busted sometime years ago, but the stock on mine is still original and looks like new. One of the most accurate .22 Cal rifles I have ever shot. jc Higgins mod29 22auto pat 255249 although other 583.79 instead very good condition. hard to find out any thing on these old 22 autos

the model #is not 583.75 and its not the price either its a mid 50s to early 60s model 31. do u seriously think that a 22 rifle was almost 600 bucks in the mid 50s. and if the extractor is missing it will jam almost everytime. where are u from that someone offered u 750 bucks for a 125 dollar gun

well, sorry for the rudness, this is no way to accept someone into the gun world, I currently have two j.c.higgins 22's. model 29 model 30 you can go to the high standard website and find a lot about them and a manual. the manual will have a squirell on the front of it. any parts you need such as butt stock or butt plate you can find on numrich gunparts. they have the largest supply of parts i have ever ordered from. I am still attempting to find out what year mine were made they were hand me downs. if you are having trouble with jamming first off make sure you are not using federal 22 shells they are a mess, secondly you may need to purchase a new spring for the bolt. the manual will show you how to remove the bolt and the spring goes behind it. bolt comes out from the bottom of rifle after the trigger houseing is removed. very simple and enjoyable gun to work on and shoot, very accurate. new spring and new fun. I also purchased new firing pin, and firing pin spring. these little babies can shoot. best of luck.
