Desired salary means "how much do you want to be paid?" However, just throwing down a 9 digit number won't help a lot; think about what the job involves, its difficulty, and the education, experience and qualification needed. Have a look at the average or mean values of salary for the position, and add about 5%. You will probably end up with that number, where they would have settled for giving you less and would not have taken you seriously if you tried for more.

It is always best to answer with the average for similar positions in your area. If you have over 10 years of experience you might be able to ask for a little more. If you do not have experience, it is best to keep it on the low end of the range.

If you have no current salary what should you write for your desired salary on a job application?

Write in the salary you want to make in your job application. OK. That did not help. What kind of job are you after and for what purpose? If you want permanent employment in a field, put down what others in the field are getting as a starting salary. If you are good, put down a little more. When the interviewer asks why you put in that amount, you can say, "I am better and will do a better job." If he says, "I can get someone for less." You can reply, "You will get someone who will leave as soon as he finds what jobs in this field actually pay."
