∙ 10y agoIf you are referring to the ballpoint pen, usually called a Biro in British English, the origin comes from Laszlo Biro (Bíró László József). Bíró was the Hungarian journalist who invented the ballpoint pen. He was not the first to use a ball point mechanism, but previous versions did not work very well. His was the first design to become widely used and commercially successful. Although Bíró's name is properly pronounced "BEE-roh", most English speakers call his pen a "BYE-roh."
Biro is named after László Bíró, the Hungarian-Argentinian inventor who developed the first commercially successful ballpoint pen in the 1940s.
