John Logie Baird (born 13 August 1888 - 14 June 1946) was a Scottish engineer and inventor of the world's first practical, publicly demonstrated televisionsystem which was also the world's first fully electronic colour television tube. Although Baird's electromechanical system was eventually displaced by purely electronic systems (such as those of Philo Farnsworth), his early successes demonstrating working television broadcasts and his colour and cinema television work, means the Scotsman was the first to achieve the idea of moving pictures in another place.

75 years ago (7 September, 1927) twenty-one-year-old Philo T Farnsworth performed the first successful demonstration of an all-electronic television system in his laboratory at 202 Green Street in San Francisco, USA.

The first person to produce a working television system was John Logie Baird, a Scotsman who was living in England. His "televisor" system was based on a rotating disc that Gottlieb Nipkow had produced some 30 years before in Germany. Nipkow saw the potential for the disc but never developed it into a practical application.

Baird's first demonstration was in 1925 and the system was used for public broadcasts by the BBC in 1929.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Philo Farnsworth was working on similar systems. In 1927, he demonstrated his version, also an electro-mechanical system. By 1929, he had eliminated the moving parts and so produced the first fully electronic television. The 1929 demonstration would lead to the commercial launch of television in America by RCA in 1939.

There were many others who contributed to the development of television but Baird and Farnsworth are still remembered today as two of the key players in the history of the most popular entertainment medium in the world.
The first fully electronic television system was invented in San Francisco, CA by Philo Farnsworth in 1927/1928.
The first public showing of television was in the Newmarket Bar, Falkirk, Scotland.
John Logie Baird, a Scotsman, invented the first fully working TV system in the United Kingdom. It was first demonstrated in 1925 in London and was the first system to be used for public scheduled broadcasts in 1929. The system was electro-mechanical and used a rotating disc to deliver a picture. Despite the mechanical components, Baird's system used and proved the principles of modern television. Without exception, all television systems used today are based on the scanning system employed by Baird.

Across the Atlantic, Philo Farnsworth developed a similar system and he demonstrated his version in 1927. Shortly after, Farnsworth developed the first fully electronic system with no moving parts. The elimination of the mechanical components paved the way for mass produced television.
The first television was demonstrated to the public in 1925 in England. John Logie Baird was the inventor who was a Scot living in England. His television system became commercially available in 1927 when the BBC began limited television broadcasts.

The first television was invented in Scotland by Dr. John Logie Baird, an Scottish electronics engineer. His first prototype model was first demonstrated in 1926, to an assembled gathering from the Royal Society. The following year, he developed colour TV transmission and reception. TV was first launched to the public in 1928, when TV sets became available to buy both in Britain and the USA- one of the first British models was the Baird Phonodisc, that had a circular screen only 4 inches in diameter! At first, only images could be broadcast on TV- sound accompaniment had to be sent seperately via radio, and was synchronised with the TV broadcast. However, this problem was soon overcome. The year 1928 marked a huge development in TV technology- regular broadcasts were introduced of news, weather, sport, and cookery & gardening tips- the first TV play was also broadcast that year in the USA, 'The King's Messenger'. 1928 also saw the first live outside broadcasts, the first transatlantic broadcast, and also Wimbledon was screened for the first time. Several years later, in 1936, King George VI became the first British monarch to have his coronation televised.
