Prior to 1990 the AFL (Australian Football League) was called the VFL (Victorian Football League). The league expanded to Sydney in 1982 when the South Melbourne Swans relocated to Sydney to become the Sydney Swans.
In 1987 a West Australian team West Coast Eagles and a Queensland team Brisbane Bears were introduced. The name changed in for the 1990 season to reflect the fact that there were teams outside Victoria and there were plans for more teams outside Victoria in the future.
