African-American men received the right to vote in 1870, as a result of the 15th Amendment to the constitution. But women (both black and white) did not receive the right to vote until the 19th amendment was finally ratified in August 1920.

The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude (slavery). It was ratified (formally sanctioned) on February 3, 1870. However, this gave the vote to men only. Women (both black and white) did not get the right to vote until August 1920.
