When did the film industry take off in India?

In 1899 the first Indian short film was screened, and Bollywood was born.

Just like in Hollywood the films were silent to begin with, then in the 1930s the films became 'talkies'.

Many Indians came to live and work in Britain around fifty years ago, and they brought their culture with them.

Now, Bollywood's biggest audience outside India is in Britain.

First motion movie was created by dadasaheb phalke. He also known as father of bollywood. and country's biggest cinema award is given on honour of him.

Raja Harishchandra (1913), by Dadasaheb Phalke, was the first silent feature film made in India. By the 1930s, the industry was producing over 200 films per annum. The first Indian sound film,Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931), was a major commercial success. There was clearly a huge market for talkies and musicals; Bollywood and all the regional film industries quickly switched to sound filming.

In 1937, Ardeshir Irani, of Alam Ara fame, made the first colour film in Hindi, Kisan Kanya. The next year, he made another colour film, a version of Mother India. However, colour did not become a popular feature until the late 1950s. At this time, lavish romantic musicals and melodramas were the staple fare at the cinema.

The first Indian movie which was released in 1913, Raja Harishchandra was a massive hit although just one print of the movie was made and released in Mumbai with all male cast directed by Dada Saheb Phalke. It was the start of Indian film industry.
