Cheyenne became the capital of Wyoming on the day Wyoming became a state which was July 10, 1890. However, Cheyenne had been the Territorial government seat since 1869, so it was the logical choice for state capital.

Cheyenne is the capital and largest city of the state of Wyoming. It is also the county seat of Laramie County. The town site was chosen in 1867 and populated the next year because of the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Territorial government seat was established in Cheyenne in 1869. Wyoming was made a state on July 10, 1890, so that is the official start day for Cheyenne being the state capital.
