When the mother of Jesus Christ went to visit Elizabeth and told her that she was with child the babe within Elizabeth "Leaped within her womb" John, even before he was born received a knowledge that the Christ was soon to be born, and the it was he who was to prepare the way for his coming.
John the Baptist was the son of Zachary, a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim southwest of Jerusalem after the Angel Gabriel had told Zachary that his wife would bear a child even though she was an old woman. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until about A.D. 27. When he was thirty, he began to preach on the banks of the Jordan against the evils of the times and called men to penance and baptism "for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand". He attracted large crowds, and when Christ came to him, John recognized Him as the Messiah and baptized Him, saying, "It is I who need baptism from You". When Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching in the Jordan valley. Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea when John denounced his adultrous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias, who asked for his head at the instigation of her mother. John inspired many of his followers to follow Christ when he designated Him "the Lamb of God," among them Andrew and John, who came to know Christ through John's preaching. John is presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of the Messiah. His feast day is June 24th and the feast for his beheading is August 29th.
St. John the Baptist was not beatified or canonized. He was proclaimed a saint by early Christians because of his martyrdom. The canonization process did not come into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church, martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection of Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for Christ by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their lives for Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolubly united to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Body.
He became a saint at the same time as any Christian becomes a saint--when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and began to live for him. All Christians are referred to in The Bible as saints. There are probablly 100 references throughout the Bible which clearly tell us as much. For example, in Philemon, Paul while he was in prison, wrote to Philemon and thanked him for his faith in Christ and for using his house for a place of worship for the saints in that area. The saints would have been the people who gathered to worship on the 1st day of the week. Saints are the righteous people in Bible days and today.

The Word SAINT in the Bible in Greek is 'hogas' means 'holy-pure' and it is used in the New Testament for Believers before Christ dies Matt.27:52 and it's for believers in Messiah all through the New Testament. All believers and then Saints, for God says: "Be you Holy for I am Holy", Holy in Hebrew is 'Kadosh', which just means: 'Set Apart'. SO JOHN BECAME A SAINT WHILE IN THE WOMB! Luke1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe(John) leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit:
Luke 1:44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy." So John was hand pick from Conception, he was special, no one needs to die to be a Saint/Believer or anything special, according to the Bible a;; believers are special when you come to Messiah Yeshua(Jesus)! So if ou want to be a Saint, just believe everything Christ said,
meaning: 'Do we go by God's WORD or by Man's Traditions?' We better go by God's word period, not just pick and chose the parts we want, we better understand Romans 11 and 1 Peter 2:21!
