Abraham, with God's help, singlehandedly trounced the supremacy of the evil Nimrod. He received God's promise of inheriting the Holy Land (Genesis 13). He strove to raise a family (Genesis ch.15, 17, and 24) which would serve God (Genesis 18:19); and God eventually blessed his efforts, granting him many children (ibid., ch.16, 21 and 25), as He had promised (Genesis ch.17). The first and only mention of the Hebrew people in the Egyptian records is in a stele that celebrates the subjugation of several rebel Canaanite cities just before 1200 BCE, along with the absolute defeat of the Israelites ("their seed is not"). The stele's reference to the Israelites is peculiar because the language suggests that they were not yet a nation, but just a self-defined group of semi-nomadic peasants. The archaeological evidence also supports this date, with archaeologists saying that small settlements began to proliferate in the Canaanite highlands from around 1200 BCE. The consensus of scholars is now that the Israelites were actually Canaanite peasants who migrated away from the rich coastal regions into the hitherto sparsely populated Canaanite hinterland. There was no Exodus from Egypt as described in The Bible, and no Patriarchs who received a covenant from God.

The terms 'Jew' and Judaism are derived from the kingdom of Judah, but are usually used to refer to the people and their religious beliefs after the time of the Babylonian Exile, or at least after the monotheistic reforms introduced in the seventh century BCE by King Josiah.
