She began her first term on 4th May 1979, with a landslide victory over Jim Callaghan's incompetent Labour Government. Her first 3 years as Premier led to her becoming deeply unpopular with the British public due to her sweeping economic cuts and industrial closures, which led to a huge rise in unemployment and an increase in poverty for millions of people- she regained popularity after her quick and decisive handling of The Falklands War between April - June 1982, which resulted in her being re-elected as PM the following year.
