The first episode for both was "Sweeps," which originally aired September 15, 1993. S. Epatha Merkenson replaced Dann Florek and Jill Hennessy replaced Richard Brooks on an edict Creator Dick Wolf got from then-NBC Entertainment Head Warren Littlefield, who threatened cancellation unless women were added to the main cast (although Carolyn McCormick, who has played Dr. Elizabeth Olivet since the start of season two in September 1991 did have her name in the opening credits during seasons three and four).

∙ 13y agoS. Epatha Merkerson's first appearance in Law and Order wasn't as Anita Van Buren; she appeared as the character 'Denise Wintes' in the episode 'Mushrooms', first aired February 26, 1991.
Her first episode as Lt. Van Buren was called 'Sweeps', first aired September 15, 1993. She played Lt. Van Buren in 291 episodes, until Law and Order's final episode, 'Rubber Room', which first aired May 24, 2010.
She also appeared as Lt. Van Buren in an episode of Criminal Intent called, 'Badge', which aired April 28, 2002; and an episode of Law and Order: Trial by Jury called 'Skeleton' which aired April 15, 2005.
