St Augustine is considered to be the nation's first settlement, and therefore is also Florida's first settlement. It was the site of a major Spanish fort for many years and the same fort has at times been occupied by the French and the English.

In current days, St Augustine is a well-known tourist destination.

"Florida" has been known as Florida since Ponce De Leon landed on 1513. Saint Augustine is the U.S.'s oldest city, founded at 1565. The Spanish didn't turn over Florida, including Saint Augustine, to the United States until 1821. In 1845, Florida became a state.

It has been important for several hundred years. It is the oldest city in the United States established in 1565 by the Spanish. One of the little known bits of history is that before American slaves escaped to the north St. Augustine was open for slave to escape to and find freedom. They could own and buy land, go to school, and live as free people.
