Small numbers of advisers and trainers 1959-1965.
The major build up of Marine and Army Divisions came in 1965-66.
The draw-down began in 1971, and all combat troops were out of the country by the end of April, 1973.
HiThe Viet Nam war was actually started by the French in the early 1950s, but they pretty soon realized that it was an unwinnable war and were happy enough to turn it over to the Americans, with their insane fear (real or convenient to get money from congress for new super-weapons) of COmmunism in the mid 50s.At first, the South Viet Namese soldiers were merely "advised" by a few thousand American troops, but it wasn't long before combat troops were being sent; first a trickle of regular army then, as the conflict escalated, to thousands, then hundreds of thousands of both regular and drafted combat troops.Phil
America fought to prevent communists from taking over Vietnam. they failed, and communists took over vietnam. Then the communists decided not to be communist anymore but shop at Mcdonalds and wal-mart instead. Did america lose the vietnam war? It depends on whether you look short term or long term

Although many US senators were against the Vietnam War by 1968, only senators Morse, Gruening and Nelson were voting against appropriations. There seemed to be a consensus that voting money for the troops was not a test on one's position on the war. The belief was that the soldiers were entitled to government funding as long as the troops remained in Vietnam.
Only North Vietnam fought against America since the Americans had sided with North Vietnam at the time. The war involved with America began in 1954 and ended January of 1975. It extended at least 21 years, give or take.
The term "combat troops" is confusing to civilians (and some military personnel too) because the term has been abused for so long. All US Army personnel are combat troops with specialized branches that specialize into specific combat jobs, formerly (which is why they used to go to BOOT CAMP; formerly known as Basic Combat Infantryman's Training) known as the combat arms branch: Armor (tanks), Artillery (cannons), and the Infantry (formerly fighting men/foot soldiers). During the late 1990 the US Army "may" have added other branches to that specialized combat arms system. Rumor control stated that the aviation branch was added to the combat arms system. The combat arms of the US Army are the conventional fighting branches of the US Army (or was during the Viet War days). US Combat troops, along with specialized troops were deployed to SOUTH Vietnam in 1955. CONVENTIONAL forces (those combat arms men previously discussed above were deployed in 1965).
for for years
It took 4 years to fully withdraw U.S. troops.

The United States had troops in Vietnam beginning in 1961. The last American solider left Saigon on April 30, 1975.

they can stay 60 days without the authorization of congress..
i did a report a long time ago in school and researched this information. On average there were only about 35,000 combat soldiers in Vietnam, on the average. Which made up only about 10% of the total American soldiers in Vietnam. It takes alot of support personnel to take care of the logistics, administrative needs, and etc... for each combat soldier. The number of combat soldiers in Vietnam rose to approximately 50,000 combat soldiers during the Tet Offensive.

While he would have liked to have been remembered for his "great society" which brought us medicare, the civil rights act, and other such programs to help the poor, the unfortunate truth is he will probably always be remembered as the president that ramped up the Vietnam war. As long as there are Vietnam era people still alive he will be remembered as the president that fully commited American troops to the Vietnam conflict that resulted in over 50,000 American troops being killed. There were riots in the streets of America protesting the war. The country was pretty much on edge over the whole issue.
Dwight Eisenhower sent the first advisers to Vietnam. John F Kennedy sent the first US Green Berets to Vietnam. We could've not have to worry about the Vietnam but the US signed a document saying that the US will help with war with communism without hesitation.
