The Yazuka TV Company in Japan in 1974 actually developed a 720p HDTV but it needed insane connections that couldn't be used.

Development of HD technology continued with numerous companies around the globe working on production and display equipment. Working systems existed by the 1990s although they were not commercially viable until some years later.

Digital TV first came out in 1996 and saw very limited usage. It took several years for it to gradually take over analog broadcasts which have all but been eliminated as of 2014.

Does a HDTV need a tuner to play off a digital antenna?

All televisions need a tuner to receive digital signals but almost all modern televisions have an integrated tuner. By linking the antenna feed into the RF input of the television, you should have a complete system without needing an external tuner. This should be the case for almost all televisions sold from around 2008 onwards. Televisions sold before 2008 (and a few sold since then) are likely to need an external tuner or digital converter box. Although all televisions now sold should have the right tuner for the region, there will be some rare exceptions. Before buying a television, always ask if it has an integrated digital tuner.

Do you have to have a digital converter box?

No, you should not need a digital converter box anymore (unless you are still using an old analog television). Most digital televisions sold are capable of receiving both digital signals and the few remaining analog signals (permitted for very low power stations only at this time).

Are modern televisions only digital televisions?

In the UK, the analogue TV transmission is being phased out; the first area was turned off this year and the whole of the UK will be entirely digital by the end of 2012. Despite this, analogue only TVs are still sold. This isn't as short sighted as may first appear - digital TV is often received via external receiver boxes; in fact there is a lot to be said for external receivers as it means that as new technologies are introduced (such as PVR, Freesat and the upcoming HD DTT service) it doesn't require a new TV to be purchased.

When everything goes digital, how will I know if my television will work?

All televisions sold after March 1, 2007 include a digital tuner (by law) so you are good if you have bought a TV since then. If your television is labeled as Integrated Digital Tuner, Digital Tuner Built-In, Digital Receiver, Digital Tuner, DTV, ATSC, or HDTV then it has a built in device that will be fine after Feb. 17, 2009. If your television set is labeled as a Digital Monitor or HDTV Monitor, or as Digital Ready or HDTV Ready, this does not mean it actually contains a digital tuner. All this means is this TV is capable of handling the converter box. Thus, you still will likely need a separate set-top box which contains a digital tuner in order to view over-the-air digital programming.
