Slapstick comedy originated with the Commedia del'Arte in Italy. The name "slapstick" came from a crude sound effect maker. Two pieces of wood were slapped together when a character would hit another -- hence, "slapstick."

During comedy horseplay in pantomime type theater the actors would strike each other with a pair of paddles strapped together, these would make a loud slap but leave no injury, as they became known as slap-sticks so did the type of comedy associated with them.
