ANSWER:

As for slavery in the United States, it began with the Europeans who settled in the American Colonies.

First, the Americans tried to make slaves out of the American Indians, to do the work for them. But, since the Indians were natives of America, it was no trouble for them to escape into the wilderness.

Then, there was the process for those called Indentured Servants. This was a legally bound servant, either White or Black. In return for their ship passage to America, they would sign a contract, or indenture, agreeing to work without pay for a specific period of time, usually three to five years.

When an indentured servant's time was up, he or she would enter American society with full legal rights. Upon becoming free, servants were entitled to "freedom dues." This included a suit of clothes, farming tools, and in some colonies, 50 acres of land. Nearly a third of the Europeans who came to America before the Revolution paid for their transport with temporary bondage.

In the 1640's Black slaves from Africa were brought to America. This would push the indentured servant process back with some strength. For the farmer or plantation owner realized that Black slaves would be cheaper, than having to pay the Whites the "freedom dues."

Also, the landowners knew that most all of the Black slaves would be uneducated, did not know anything about the land they were being taken to, and would live in fear of those who controlled them.

Slavery has been around for thousands of years. Slaves were seen as loot or money just as gold.

The first recorded instances of slavery date back to 1760 BC, as written in the Code of Hammurabi, a Babylonian record of law. Unfortunately, slavery seems to have began with civilization. There isn't much evidence of slavery in hunter-gatherer societies, however.

Slavery originally began with the Aztecs in the 14th Century. They would enslave other Aztecs, usually as a form of criminal punishment. The first African slaves were used by them beginning in 1519.
