Although some hostilities were reported prior to the date, the usual reference is the firing on Fort Sumter (Charleston, SC) by Confederate artillery on April 12, 1861. The fort was surrendered and evacuated the following day. The only mammal killed was a horse. No other shots hit any person.

Three months earlier, an unarmed ship attempting to bring supplies to the fort was fired upon on January 9. An armed relief and resupply arrived on April 11, at which time the decision was made to fire on the fort before the reinforcements were landed.
Started in April 12, 1861 - April 9, 1865 (last shot fired June 22, 1865)
April 1861, when the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, an island garrison occupied by the US Army. As it formed part of South Carolina, the Confederates regarded the fort as their territory.
Officially, 12 April 1861

The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861 at 4:30am with the Confederate bombardment of Union held Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina.

The ability of the South to effectively prosecute the war ended when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on April 9, 1865. This date is frequently cited as the traditional end of the War. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Union General William T. Sherman 17 days later on the twenty-sixth. Several commands were surrendered the following month ending military hostilities.
