The first fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. However, Governor Arthur Phillip quickly determined that Botany Bay was unsuitable for settlement. The fleet was then moved north to Port Jackson, arriving there on 26 January 1788, the day now celebrated as Australia Day.
