Wales and England have always been part of Great Britain, as Great Britain is an island and not a country, whereas the UK is a country. Wales and England were together under the Romans, but became separate countries during the Middle Ages. In 1282, Wales was annexed by England and wasn't really treated as being separate part to England until the 1950s.

1536.

You need to be a little careful with the terminology you use. I will assume the question you mean is: "when did England and Wales unite?".

Wales was invaded by King Edward I of England and conquered in 1284 AD. However it was not considered to be united with England at this point; rather it was a separate territory which now came under English control to an extent. It wasn't until 1536 that an "Act of Union" was passed between the two countries. From this point English law was to be the only law of Wales (this is no longer true since Wales devolved, a process begun by the Government of Wales Act 1998, and now has its own parliament and the power to legislate).

One can now think of Britain, in a political sense,as being England and Wales united (though geographically speaking one could argue thatBritain alwaysreferred to the whole island). Later Scotland united too after the Acts of Union 1707and Great Britain was formed (England, Wales and Scotland). Thiswas also known informallyas theUnited Kingdom of Great Britain during the 18th century, however today's use and the official useof "United Kingdom" refers to when Great Britainthen went on to unite with Ireland with the Acts of Union 1800(later only Northern Ireland remained part of the Kingdom when most of Ireland became independent).

The terms are often used interchangeably and often meant to mean the same thing, but Britain, Great Britain and the UK are not the same thing in a strict sense (hence why there is more than one name).

The strict answer to the question is that Wales became a part of the United Kingdom upon creation of the officialUnited Kingdom ofGreat Britain and Irelandin 1800 (which is now the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).
