The Democratic Party was originally created to run against Lincoln and keep slavery. Since then there have been major political flips and the Democrats have been (In general) more progressive on civil issues.

The Democratic Party can be traced back to 1792. It was first known as the Jeffersonian Republicans, and then later, by 1798, the Democratic-Republican Party. By the mid-1820s, that party ceased to operate, and there was a political split that ultimately led to two separate parties (Democrats and Republicans-- the Republicans were first called the Whigs). The party that came to be called the Democrats officially began to use that name in the 1830s, during the time when Andrew Jackson was the president.
