Prior to the election of 1804, electors in the electoral college each voted for two persons but the votes were in general and not allocated to president and vice president:
The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate.
(Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 of the US Constitution)
The 12th Amendment to the Constitution changed that to read:
The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and all persons voted for as Vice-President and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate.

That Amendment passed in time to take effect for the election of 1804.

They are called for in the US Constitution but no means of election is specified. Originally they were individual candidates for president, whoever got the most votes became president and whoever got the second most votes became vice president. This was eventually found to result in presidents and vice presidents that could not work together well. So eventually the parties started picking a president/vice president pair and they were elected together.

This is the concept that we are the product of the environment we were raised in, our family structure, our religion, etc. Science today shows that even though all of those aspects do contribute, we have the ability to be whoever it is that we wish and are actually able to rewrite our beginning.
