that is ocmepletly up to you. its your money. if you would like to give lots, give it. they can spend it at their lesure. i suggest getting to know your niece a bit better. spend a day out and maybe go shopping or have lunch. if you come to the desision that she is responsible enough for a large gift and wont waste it then do what you want. as i said its your money so its entirly up to you.
Answer 2: It is up to you, but situations like this, graduations etc is where I usually give the $50 Visa or Amex gift cards. $50 doesnt make you seem cheap and everybody can use them everywhere.
Also an answer: If the reception is at an upscale banquet hall most people give in accord with the cost per meal per person. Between $50 to $75 or $100 you can never go wrong.
