The best way to determine this is to backwash the filter and see what the pressure is at that time. Then go 7-10 PSI above that and this will be your pressure to watch to tell you when to clean your filter.

DE filter, sand filter: Notice and mark the filter gage at the number which registers the lowest reading when the filter is at it's cleanest. Use a Sharpie.

When the pressure goes 8 to 10 #'s above that mark it is time to back wash the filter. If your gage is not accurate, old, damaged or just doesn't work. a good rule of thumb is about every 30 days. You will also sense a decreased amount of suction when vacuuming the pool. Back wash then too.

Cartridge filters: About the same as above but now you have to disassemble the filter to hose off the cartridge(s).

Backwashing your pool can result in your drain being clogged. It can also cause other problems such as malfunctioning drains. It is important to pay attention to directions when doing something you've never done before.

A Pool is filtered for a certain period or periods of time per day. When the backpressure in front of the filter becomes too high it is time to backwash the filter if you have a "sand" or "DE" filter. After back washing i.e. when the water is running clear through the observation bubble on the side of the multiport, stop the pump and set it to rinse for about a minute or when the water in the bubble runs clear again. The rinse stops cloudy water from being pushed back into the pool. Sometimes but not always, you may find that the backpressure increases into the red rapidly after vacuuming the pool floor, this means it needs a backwash and rinse.

There is no point back-washing the pool if the filter is not dirty as this will only waste water and if you have a saltwater pool salt.

I accidentally vacuumed dirt in my pool using backwash mode instead of waste mode. How do I get the dirt out from under the sand?

There wont be any dirt under the sand. When you vacuum your pool you should do it on filter mode Otherwise you will lose a lot of water for nothing, this would be especially wasteful in the case of a salt water pool. Ofter having vacuumed the pool on filter mode and if the pressure gets too high backwash. after backwash rinse for a minute, then return to filter.

When adding stabilizer to a salt water pool is the backwash running while pouring in the stabilizer?

When adding stabilizer to a pool you should not have a backwash valve open. Stabilizer should be added directly into the skimmer basket and you should open the skimmer all the way and close off the main drains for 24 hours.

How do you know when you need new sand in a Hayward filter for an inground pool?

Depending on the size of the pool and the size of the filter and the amount of times you have to backwash, also if you have had a lot of rain then you may need to backwash more than usual. If you put the pool in and the filter and you know how old the sand is, if you are backwashing more than usual, change the sand. Also before you backwash check the pressure of the water going back into the pool, then backwash check the pressure again the pressure should for any size hayward pump push your hand away if it does not then change your sand.

If you're talking about your pool filter, it should be set to filter or run. Use the bypass or recirculate setting if you wish to circulate the water without having the water pass through the filter. Use the backwash setting to clean the filter.

how to drain water from pool?

Just backwash until it is at the level you would like it to be. Or get a floating swimming pool skimmer ond take advantage of the free water and save on pool salt if you have a saltwater chlorinator.
