some belts will "squeal" some when you start off. If they do, you should change your belt. Sometimes you will notice it takes a lot more throttle to get going than it used too, that can also be a sign you need to change your belt. I would change mine every 1500 to 2000 miles regardless and if you know you are going on a long trip, change it and keep the old belt as a back up.
