It means you need to go to Autozone or Shucks/Kraagen and have them read the codes with the diagnostic code reader which they will usually do free of charge. Something in or on the engine is malfunctioning and needs repair/replacement. The diagnostic code will tell you where to look for the problem. Oxygen sensor is an example of typical problem discovered but all engine sensors are monitored.
Yes, but if it stays on you should plan to take it in soon to have the engine checked. That is why the light is there.
I have a 98 mystique, and when the check engine light comes on, I simply disconnect the positive battery terminal for a couple of minutes. When I replace it, the check engine light is cleared. It resets the computer.

I am having a problem right now with my check engine light too. I don't know why your motor shuts down, but in the book it states that when your check engine light comes on, you are having a problem with your emission control. For you, it might be a sensor is shutting down your engine. I know last month Mister Transmission was having a free check out your engine special, so you might want to call there to see if they can put your car on a diagnotic. Good luck
check crank sensor, coil pack, map sensor. under hot condition! use ohm meter
have vehicle scanned to determine problem
on the bottom side of the intake manifold...2 bolts and a quick connect plug...the new one comes with a new gasket...
Need to get it scanned to find out the code. You got a problem that comes and goes. The problem comes then sends a code then after so many starts if it is not there the light will go off. Go to a place like Advance Auto and they will scan it for free and then post the code.
On a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer : The " check gage " light comes on if the engine coolant temperature is too high , the engine oil pressure is too low , or the gas gauge is at or near empty
You must scan the computer to find out the code first Go to a qualified mechanic for a diagnostic
The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions. If the check engine light is flashing a misfire has been detected
