The basic answer is fertilization. Fertilization occurs when one spermatozoon (sperm) enters the ovum (egg) and the 2 nuclei containing the parents' chromosomes merge. Once the 2 nuclei merge it is called a zygote until it divides into 16 cells at which time it is called a morula cause it resembles a mulberry.

When the egg and sperm meet this may lead to fertilization and thus conception. This isn't always the case, sometimes sperm will not be able to penetrate the egg to fertilize it.
