Duke University in Durham, North Carolina was founded as Browns School in what is now Trinity, North Carolina, in 1838.
It became The Union Institute Academy in 1841when the state of North Carolina issued a charter.
It was renamed Normal College in 1851 and then Trinity College in 1859.
In 1892 it moved to Durham with the help of donations of land and money from Julian S. Carr and Washington Duke, both prominent industrialists.
In 1924 Washington Duke's son, James B Duke, established the The Duke Endowment with a trust fund of $40 million to benefit hospitals, orphanages, The Methodist Church and four colleges including what was then still called Trinity College.
College President William Preston Few re-named the college Duke University in acknowledgement of this gift and work on the first new buildings with the name Duke University began in 1925.
